Phoenixville Pub Crawl 2010 – Saturday March 13

by Washington Washington

For those of you who haven’t seen that big ass banner on Bridge Street, the Phoenixville Pub Crawl is happening this Saturday March 13th from 1-5pm. Aside from the banner, there’s a website devoted to the event, a grassroots marketing campaign (postcards in bars), and various other attention grabbing mechanisms… So what does this all mean???

It means that Phoenixville knows how to party, dammit!

Where else is excessive mid-day drinking so heartily encouraged? I mean, other towns host pub crawls (such as Manayunk, etc), but they aren’t advertised and promoted like this one is… And they aren’t as organized either.

It’s a great thing that the local bars all came together on this, as they should all do a ton of business on this day. Each location will be will be offering a different micro brew(s)… here’s the rundown and my personal preferred crawl order:

Sly Fox BrewerySly Fox Beer

EpicureanIthaca, Lagunitas, Spring House

PJ Ryan’sLongtrail

Bistro on BridgeHeavy Seas, Rogue, Brooklyn Brewery

Molly Maguire’sVictory, Kilkenny Irish Cream Ale

Iron Hill BreweryIron Hill Beer

Baxter’s 101 BridgeStoudts Brewery

Pickering Creek InnFounders, Weyerbacher, Cigar City

Of course there are more bars in Phoenixville, the bars above are only the ones that chose to participate. These additional bars could easily be worked into your crawl (see our story, Pub Crawlin’ Comes a-Callin’ This Thanksgiving Eve).

Have fun, rock hard, and be safe!

Firebird Festivities – PART II “The After Parties”

by Washington Washington

postfirebird

So what happens after the bird burns down to the ground? Your buzz fades to black like the soot left behind by the phoenix. Your feeling like the night can’t end, not now… Not ever. It’s time to strut your sweet ass over to Bridge Street where the real party is about to start!

According to www.firebirdfestival.com, there will be legions of street performers up and down Bridge, called buskers, performing for tips. While I don’t condone giving any street people money, the buskers may actually amuse / surprise / entertain you. Please support these local artists by tossing them a few duckets / cigs / bagels / whatever.

Iron Hill Brewery has created a spiced holiday ale, called “Winter Warmer” which will be tapped on tap Saturday to celebrate the festival. The Winter Warmer was brewed with cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, clove, vanilla, galangal, and mahlab. Tim Stumpf (Head Brewer) said, “It tastes like a gingerbread cookie!” Others beers available that day / night include: Nut Brown ale, Chocolate Stout, Forbidden Fruit, Imperial IPA, and Peach Wheat.

There have been mumurs on this website of a special “celebrity” guest performing at the Pickering Creek Inn. While this cannot be confirmed or denied, it does appear that they will have live music by Left Foot First and a $3.00 well drink specials, starting at 8:00pm.

At Molly Maguire’s, you can usually count on a rawkus time and Saturday night is no exception. Midnight Social takes to the stage at 10pm.

So you have options. I’m sure there are many more, but most of my queries to bar managers went unanswered. In any case, go out and party. Celebrate your town, your burning mascot… Rise from the ashes, rise to the occasion!

Where to watch the big game

by Washington Washington

Everybody and their mom has Phillies fever. Assuming that you don’t have a ticket to Game 5 (which start at $161 for standing room on StubHub), choosing a local establishment at which to watch the game can be almost as important as the game itself. Well, not really, but finding the perfect environment is a necessity.

There are no shortages of great bars for sports viewing around town, but the following criteria must be considered when making your choice:

1)       TV Positioning / Proximity / Quantity / Volume

2)       Drink and Food Specials

3)       Clientele

4)       Superstition?

Let’s asses a few solid options…

Bistro on Bridge is a Philly2Night “Series Headquarters” location. They’ll be offering up $2 Coors Light drafts, $2.50 Coors Light bottles, and ½ price appetizers for all playoff games. Their TV spread is unmatched. If you can’t get a good look at the TVs in this place, better get yourself some glasses pal. I’m almost certain they’ll have the volume at full blast… hopefully drowning out Nickelback, or whatever horrible music is playing on the jukebox.

Iron Hill Brewery also has a nice setup for sports viewing. Their two TVs are visible at almost any angle in the bar area. You could have a seat at the bar or at a table and be sure to see the game. Also, they should have the volume of the broadcast turned up, which is essential. There are sure to be a bunch of fans in there making noise as well. As for superstition, they have a pretty good track record. No weird mojo here.

PJ Ryan’s is always a good spot for catching the game. There’s a lot of space, several TVs, and the crowd is almost always fairly raucous. Tonight just happens to be Wing Night: 3 Wings for a $1, $2.50 Coors Light bottles, $3 Blue Moon Drafts.

The Pickering Creek Inn is offering free hot dogs during the game (limit 2 per person / bar area only / must buy a minimum of 1 drink). They’ll also have a domestic beer special although I’m not sure what this will be yet.

As for the others, Molly Maguire’s certainly wouldn’t be a bad choice, and the Sly Fox has great wings and incredible beers.

In the end, we can only hope for another incredible game shared with great friends, good food and ample drinks… That’s what it’s all about right?

Be sure to let us know where you’re watching the game in the COMMENT section!
